HONEY TRIP to Sundarban – Land of the Tigers

31 Mar ‘10

Cruise through the outer boundary of the forest

Early in the morning, upon arrival of the passengers, the boat will start cruising towards the Burigoalini Forest Station in Satkhira Range of Sundarban.

After cruising for most of the day and crossing different rivers we expect the boat to arrive at the destination late in the afternoon. Here we shall take you ashore to see the preparation of all the Mawalis (honey collectors) who will be preparing themselves for their venture inside the forest the next day to collect the wild honey. We shall follow one of those boats so that you can witness the very interesting way of honey collection from the forest by these hard working and courageous people locally known as `MAWALI’.

Overnight onboard.

Official beginning of the honey collection season in Sundarban

For years it has been a tradition to inaugurate the honey collection season on the first day of April. However, if this day falls on a Saturday or Tuesday they will do the inauguration later as those days are deemed as ominous by the locals. This year it is on a Thursday. So we hope that the official opening will take place on this day.

Normally, after getting the permission from the forest department, a religious ritual takes place at the forest office participated by all the honey collectors, before they set out from the ghat (jetty). We understand that the beginning will not take place before noon.

Once they officially open, the boats will start a kind of race to enter the forest first and locate the honeycomb. We shall have one of these boats tied with us and you will have the unique chance of witnessing them collecting the honey.

Overnight onoard.
